It took some time, but the Phillies got the job done.
Pushing past 2:00 a.m. back on the east coast, the Phillies rallied from behind to take the series finale from the Padres 7-5. It just took them 13 innings in San Diego to do it.
Down 5-3 in the eighth with two out and Domonic Brown on second from a double, Delmon Young launched a home run into left to tie it up with the Padres.
It would take a few more innings before the Phillies scored another run, but the bullpen was able to get the job done in the meantime, with J.C. Ramirez and Phillippe Aumont each pitching two scoreless innings, then with Jake Diekman and Joe Savery pitching a scoreless inning each.
The Phillies would go on to score the winning runs in the 13th, and they didn't even have to get a hit to do it.
Padres' reliever Tommy Layne hit Chase Utley with a pitch, then walked Brown two at-bats later.
After a coaching visit to the mound, Ben Revere hit a ground ball to second that was bobbled by San Diego's Logan Forsythe.
Revere reached first safely, and Chase Utley got a good enough jump from second to score on the fielding error. But the play didn't end there.
Forsythe made a throw to home to try and make a play at the plate, but the ball went by the catcher Nick Hundley instead, which allowed Domonic Brown to slide home and score.
After a rough past few appearances, Jonathan Papelbon came in to close the game. He only allowed one hit to Jesus Guzman, but struck out Hundley in the next at-bat to earn his 15th save of the year.
Cole Hamels, who has ran into some bad luck since the beginning of the season, had another rough day, allowing five runs (four earned) off of seven hits in six innings pitched. Hamels gave up a two-run homer to center fielder Chris Denorfia in the fifth, followed by an RBI double by right fielder Kyle Blanks in the sixth.
Hamels gave up the first two runs to the Padres in third via an RBI double by Forsythe and an RBI single by Denorfia.
The comeback gave Hamels (2-11) a no-decision and instead gave Joe Savery his first win of 2013.
The Phillies (38-41) will head to Los Angeles for the next series in their 10-game road trip. They'll face the Dodgers (35-42) in a four-game series that starts on Thursday night.
Jonathan Pettibone (3-3, 4.14 ERA) and Los Angeles' Zach Greinke (4-2, 3.79 ERA) are Thursday night's probable starters.
