Ryan Howard will miss six to eight weeks after an MRI revealed that he has a torn meniscus in his left knee, an injury that will require surgery.
Howard was placed on the 15-day disabled list before Saturday's 13-4 loss against the Braves, citing pain in his knee as the reason why.
After the team announced that Howard was going on the DL, general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said that they would take a conservative approach to Howard's injury.
"I think we're going to be pretty conservative with him," Amaro said. "If [Howard's knee] needs surgery -- hopefully it doesn't -- if it needs surgery we'll take care of it. If it doesn't, we'll try to rehab him and get him back."
Unfortunately, surgery is going to be needed in this case.
Howard has played in 80 of the Phillies' 89 games so far, hitting .266, with 11 home runs and 43 RBIs. His on-base plus slugging percentage stood at .784 before he went on the DL.
