PHILLIES: Kratz is back

July 21, 2013

By Nick Tricome

Erik Kratz is back in the lineup and will be catching for Cliff Lee this afternoon.

Kratz has been out since June 9 after he injured his left knee in the ninth inning of a 4-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.

An MRI revealed that Kratz had a meniscus tear in his knee and needed surgery to repair it.

Kratz began a rehab assignment a month later and was activated right before the All-Star break, taking Ben Revere's spot on the roster, who is out with a broken foot.

Although his batting average and on-base percentage is below fellow catcher Carlos Ruiz's, Kratz has managed to be more offensively productive than Ruiz in 2013.

Kratz has eight home runs, 22 RBIs and a .436 slugging percentage in 44 games. His batting average is .229 and his on-base percentage is .290, compared to Ruiz's .257 average and .309 on-base percentage.

However, Ruiz has only four extra base hits and seven RBIs in 42 games this year. He has also yet to hit a home run in 2013.

Like Kratz, Ruiz has also missed time with injury. He injured his hamstring and was placed on the disabled list back in the middle of May, missing 27 games.

Ruiz also missed the first 25 games of 2013 due to a suspension for a banned substance.

The Phillies play the Mets at 1:10 PM, with Lee facing All-Star and Mets' ace Matt Harvey.
